10 Steps to becoming a better consultant – Step2 Leverage Technology

10 STEPS TO BECOMING A BETTER CONSULTANT

STEP 2 of 10: LEVERAGE TECHNOLOGY

The second step to becoming a better consultant is to leverage technology. There are three main reasons WHY a consultant should leverage technology.

1

LEVERAGE TECHNOLOGY TO ADD VALUE TO THE BUSINESS

One of the main reasons a consultant is chosen is the client sees the consultant as adding value to their business. It’s best practice for consultants to move away from the billable hour to value-based pricing, a topic for another day. A successful value-based pricing process includes a value discussion before every engagement. During this discussion, a consultant can 'wow' their customer with their cutting-edge technology and knowledge that they bring to the table. I started this series by going over the first step to becoming a better consultant, regular communication with the key decision-maker. These nurturing sessions are another opportunity for the consultant to apply their technology know-how to problem-solve with their client. In conclusion, if a consultant leverages technology, they are adding value to both their own business and their clients' business. It is a win-win situation.

LEVERAGE TECHNOLOGY TO INCREASE THE HUMAN FACTOR

If you don’t have trust, you don’t have a good relationship. But trust isn’t something you give and receive freely. Trust is earned through key values, such as honesty, integrity, and delivering on promises.

The bottom line is you need to deliver to your client. Whatever industry that you serve you must stay on the cutting-edge of technology and deliver impeccable customer service. This is an area where you can easily differentiate yourself from your competitors by implementing technology that solves a common problem amongst your target market. Keep your ear to the ground and listen to what your customer needs and find a solution for their ‘daily headaches’.

3

LEVERAGE TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY

Everyone knows that leveraging technology can improve productivity and streamline everyday processes. Time is money and whenever you can improve efficiencies you are cutting costs. By Keeping abreast of the latest and greatest technology, you may find software that streamlines processes and saves money in the long run. Even adding just one new software solution to your arsenal could present opportunities for both you and your clients.

LEVERAGING TECHNOLOGY IS A STRENGTH (WEAKNESS IF YOU DON’T DO IT)

So you can either be passively transformed, letting all of these technologies sweep down upon you and change your world, or you can actively be the transformer and use the tools to add value to your organization and increase the human factor.

In conclusion, we live in a day and age where you can’t ignore technology. As business owners, we must embrace technology to stay competitive. If you are a consultant it is even more important that you leverage technology on behalf of your customer. If your client fails because their competitor out-performed them with cutting-edge technology, as their consultant, you may be partially to blame. A business “passively transformed” by technology is a real weakness that should be addressed.  A minor tweak may be all that is required to turn this weakness into a strength for you and your client.
